ssssooooooo I don't know how to back up pictures to my phone's sd card because the settings bits are not actually all that well organized but I will figure it out

on another note I went to the bike shop today to buy a light and the dude at the counter pointed out I already had one

and then he said that to always come to him if I have any questions which I think means he is afraid my dumb gaijin ass is gonna get scammed if I go anywhere else

I legitimately appreciate your concern bike shop man

anyway, if you guys would be willing to give me some simple recipes I would greatly appreciate it... I tried making fried rice yesterday and it was kind of a disaster (though it was at least still edible)

I am able to fry and boil things but I am bereft of cooking common sense (I fucked up making a hard-boiled egg) so like...precise instructions would be most helpful

Can you get hold of baking-size potatoes out there/do you have an oven for such things/do you like potatoes? I just figured out how to do them myself so I'm kind of in the mood for eating all of the baked potatoes right now - they take a while cooking-wise, but apart from that it's pretty much "make hot, consume, delicious" ♥. I'm probably doing things wrong myself, but I can tell you what I do if you want ♥

My family doesn't let me forget the time I put an egg in the microwave and it exploded BUT IN MY DEFENCE THEY MAKE SCRAMBLED EGGS ETC IN THE MICROWAVE, I WAS YOUNG AND AND I'M SCARED OF THE GAS, OKAY

still scared of the gas after almost causing a kitchen fire trying to make a stirfry over the summer, I think frying is something I shall choose not to do in the future

I only have a single gas burner :( and a skillet and a pot and that is about all I have to work with

if I can get some sour cream boiled potatoes sound like a good idea though

If you are like me, lazy, I recommend trying to make large batches of things you can refrigerate or freeze and re-heat. Or, for you, medium and small batches :) This is like, noddle based things, casseroles, chili and stews. My family is particularly big on casseroles... Which is just like you throw shit in a bowl and bake it. But I don't know how much of that kind of thing is available in Japan? It may be worth buying a small slow cooker, because that's the easiest way to make chili and shit and you can't really fuck it up, like I don't even think you can burn things in a slow cooker unless you leave it in like an extra day.

problem with that is I don't have a microwave (or an oven), so I have to either eat everything right then or use it in stir-fry or something later. unless you can reheat things with a gas burner but I don't think you can, I think it just cooks it more...

I mean I could always BUY a microwave but based on previous experiences I expect they will be horrifyingly expensive and I am low on space anyway

I have a rice cooker though can you make chili in a rice cooker

dude that blows. Idk about Japan but freezing and reheating food is def the best way I know to save time and money.

I don't know if they sell them in Japan, but I am a huge fan of those jars of alfredo and red sauce that we kept eating last year. And with those all you need to do is boil noodles.

You can probably also buy pre-made curry and rice sauces, and then you just cook the rice (and if you get a rice cooker, it will take even less time) then put the sauce on.

ALSO, grilled cheese sandwiches. You can add ham or bacon as meat and then it is even moar deelishus. Butter one side of each slice of bread, put one of the slices butter side down in a warmed (on low) skillet or frying pan, put the ingredients on the bread, then put the other piece of bread on top butter side up. Flip after a minute or so. It's done once the bread is crispy and the cheese is melted. Oh yeah, and cook the meat beforehand. Once you've cooked the meat you can store it in the fridge for a fair amount of time (especially bacon), then whip out the bread, butter and cheese and make nummy sandwiches.

And I second what Reggie said. Set aside one or two times during the week to make yourself largish batches of food that can be stored and will last you as long as you need. So, you'll probably want to invest in some leftover containers, sandwich ziploc bags, etc.

I can't...find that kind of thing to be honest...... like everything is super tiny here?? I can't even find a thing of ice cream larger than a single serving size

grilled cheese sandwiches sound like a good idea though, but it is pretty hard to find meat here that isn't super costly (seafood's really cheap though). like I have literally no idea where to buy bacon.

but yeah no microwave :(

lol, okay, easy stuff that you can make! boiling noodles! like.....ramen. but! to make it oh-so-nutritious-and-extra-delicious, we add extra ingredients! like fresh vegetables! sliced/diced carrots, sliced spring onions, sliced welsh onions (nom nom), kimchi if you like that stuff (which i adore, and it tastes delicious in my ramyun), baby bokchoy (which doesn't take too long to cook in your ramen soup), and all sorts of other delicious additives. or, you could add bits of pork or beef or chicken! assuming you know how to grill shizz or panfry shizz, grab a pork loin or some chopped beef (like the stuff you see that's used to make hamburgers), and panfry it with some salt and pepper or spices for taste ;D

you're living in a marvelous country with a lot of wonderful foods at your disposal, hah, hah. try incorporating some of their spices into your food!

for example, there's furikake (rice seasonings) that you can always put in your rice and just eat it like that. it's very delicious (though not entirely nutritious) and cheap! or, you could shape them into delicious onigiri, yeah! and find salmon, maybe smoked (or if you can't), find a fillet of salmon and steam it (seasoned with salt and pepper) in the microwave (of all things!) before pulling it apart and using it as filling for your onigiri. :D

another easy dish that my grandmother likes to make is called (directly translated) chopped pork meat, which is basically just mashed pork loan mixed with finely diced vegetables (like shitake mushrooms, carrots, celery, potatoes!) and steamed in a dish (which can also be done in the microwave).

but, if you've got the tools and the ingredients, i'd like to direct you over to a wonderful youtube channel with some fun japanese recipes for you to try, lol. cookingwithdog has some lovely recipes that you can try. :D

i'm assuming that japanese supermarkets are somewhat similar to chinese ones, lol, but there should be aisles for dried noodles, yes? like where your instant noodles are, there could also be dried noodles that you have to legit boil and eat, like soumen and soba. that's particularly fun to eat with fried eggs and soy sauce and sesame oil (mixing the boiled noodles with soy sauce and sesame oil--only just a teaspoon or so, if your portions are small) and boiled vegetables or kimchi.

i encourage the buying of kimchi, which is technically korean, but pickled cabbage is a popular and actually really healthy side dish to nosh on along with noodles and rice. we asians love pickled shizz.

the only problem is I only have the one gas burner and not much space so I can't really...make things simultaneously? so when I put fried egg in things do I just...pour the egg on top or make it first or wha...t...

lol you can make the noodles first and then fry your egg. you can always heat up your noodles in the pan afterwards, but these noodles are going to be technically dry with just soy sauce and sesame oil as seasoning, lol.

but yeah, you fry your eggs afterwards. or, if you're making fried rice, you fry that shit beforehand and all your other ingredients like ground beef/pork/chicken/seafood (shrimp's a good alternative) and vegetables that nicely diced/sliced/cubed, and then mix it in your rice and season the entire thing with soy sauce and miso paste and gochujang and whatever the hell you want. |D

kimchi is delicious and nutritious, but it can be a bit smelly to other people. i personally don't see it, and i think it smells delicious, but other people including other koreans have deemed it to be smelly, so don't be too put off by the smell. because it's also pickled, it's going to be very salty, so i do suggest eating it with other foods, like rice, as a buffer for the salt. you can always just eat it as is, because it's deliciously salty, but idk how much salt you can handle, hah hah.

kimchi's delicious in eggs too. try chopping up kimchi and frying it with eggs for a kimchi omelet or scrambled kimchi and ham eggs.

oh, another thing you can buy! spam, which i think you should know about because all americans know about this shit, lol, but it's a pretty prevalent thing in asian countries, especially korea. it's fast and easy, and delicious fried. try it as a substitute if you can't find fresh meat.

and try the seafood too, lol. japan's a natural fish market, so go around and try the fish; you got the best selection of sushi around. cod's a popular fish to eat with miso, but there's also salmon and tuna and halibut and loads of other kinds you can eat, raw and cooked. :)

but idk how long you're staying in japan, but getting a microwave of some kind or some kind of convection oven will really help you in the long run, even if it seems especially expensive right now.

if you can, try finding gochujang too, which is red pepper paste (and korean, but should be in your local market). these are delicious condiments and integral parts of many japanese and korean dishes. :3

Simplest delicious recipe I know how to make: stir-fried ramen.

Take one (1) packet of ordinary top ramen. Cook as normal until at roughly 50% cooked-ness.

MEANWHILE have a wok going with some random vegetables (carrots? chopped onions? mushrooms? whatever!) in it, being lightly fried in soy sauce (medium heat).

When the veggies look pretty happily cooked, strain the ramen and throw it in with the vegetables! The ramen can be pre-cooked and left to sit, but it'll work better if it's still hot when you throw it in the wok.

Throw in some more soy sauce! Crack an egg or two straight in! Stir vigorously! Cook for like... two minutes, maybe three. The noodles should turn a beautiful brown, but if they are getting crispy, it is cooking way too long!

Turn heat off. Dump into bowl.

Yeah, just make the ramen first and set it aside. Will work just as well! Just be sure to spread the ramen out in the wok so it cooks evenly!

Could one do this with a typical frying pan? I bought some ramen that is a bit nasty on my first day in the UK and am trying to find a way to make it edible because they were like 5 for a pound so I have 4 left T_T
